東勢，你好嗎？

本街一號的春來伯，你們全家都平安嗎？車站對面賣三角圓仔的老闆夫婦，你們店裡的大湯鍋還依然熱氣騰騰嗎？新高照相館的老師傅，你還是像往常一樣，埋首在黑布裡的古董相機觀景窗後，為客人拍照嗎？肩挑舨條、九層炊甜棵，在小鎮街上到處叫賣的歐巴桑，妳是否也依然安好？

東勢，你好嗎？

初秋山麓兩旁，此時應是滿山蜜梨和新橘子芳香的時節吧？

經過了七百多個日子，面對第三個九二一的來臨，深烙傷痕的悵痛記憶，似乎不得不隨著時光消逝而漸漸遠去......。
隔著大海上遠在澎湖小島這岸的我，卻依然如此懦弱，怎也提不起勇氣，怎也說服不了自己，再度踏上回返小鎮的路，去探望這曾經是我流連忘返的地方。

東勢，你好嗎？

泰雅部落的雅大（阿姨）、瑪瑪（叔叔），你們是否依然沿著蜿蜓古道，在山林、小鎮間來來回回，運送你們在山上辛勤收成的四季豆、青椒、生薑、柑橘、綠竹筍？紅肉李的季節即將結束了，在小鎮南邊的農產集散市場裡，還找得到你們樂天愍厚的笑容嗎？市集是否一如以往，在每個陽光升起的時刻，匯集小鎮熱絡的人潮？

在那段難忘的日子裡，我喜歡漫無目的，到處閒逛著﹔喜歡逗留在街上、在市場角落，傾聽生澀的泰雅國語和客家國語交談買賣﹔五金店裡，那一排排在都市裡不容易看到的傳統農具，是那麼吸引我的目光﹔喜歡佇足在大街上的老相館前，細細品味櫥窗裡．那一幅幅東勢人的黑白臉孔，以及櫥窗後，埋首在燈箱前，整修底片的那位老師傅。

時間，彷彿在老師傳和燈箱之間凝住了。

本街一號的春來伯，總是靜靜坐在幽暗廳堂邊，在黝黑老舊的長板凳上，一刀又一刀地為小孫子刻製玩偶﹔午後打鐵店裡，鏗鏘、鏗鏘的鐵器敲擊聲，是那麼清脆響亮......布莊、榻榻米店、百貨行、中藥店、種籽行、老旅館......，從本街頭走到本街尾，小小舊舊的老店裡，盈溢著濃濃的醇厚人情.......從老街迎面而來的一張張古意笑臉，一幅幅純樸的客家生活圖像，都曾經在我眼前那麼真實地生活著。

總以為小店和老街永還可以那麼恬靜安然，可以在恆久的大甲溪畔，靜默地等候遠客的來訪。然而，遽變卻在一夕間撕毀了心中那張安適美好的老鎮地圖。一九九九年九月二十一日，電視機裡崩頹的房舍、哭號的臉龐，一幕幕刺痛了我的心。彷如人間煉獄般的東勢，難道真是我心愛的小鎮？

媽祖廟裡的眾神竟也無力回天！守護在東豐大橋上的綠麒麟，為什麼沒能在九二一那天，把凌空竄地而來的妖孽惡煞給驅離呢？難道真是定數難逃？

東勢，你好嗎？

第三個九二一的來到，也該是清風掃地塵埃散，白日昇天雲霧開的時刻吧！

東勢，你好嗎？

車站對面的三角圓仔，是否依然在滾水中浮浮沉沉，翻騰著百年不變的客家風味？

殘斷崩毀的山路，是否己回復往日通暢？
通往雪山坑的老公車，是否依然準時出發？

東勢，你好嗎？
